BREXIT: BMW APPARENTLY CONSIDERING PLACING MANUFACTURING OF MINI EV TO GERMANY

3. 3. 2017

RANKFURT (CTK, Autofox) - German carmaker BMW is considering placing planned production of the electric version of the Mini Hatch of British brand Mini in Germany rather than in the UK, German newspaper Handelsblatt wrote on February 26. The company shall begin to negotiate with the British government this week (Week 9), the sheet added.

By reflecting the production location of the Mini EV, which suggests efforts to enforce concessions from London, BMW uses the last decision of the British electorate to leave the European Union. The British car industry would be threatened with imposition of duties on exports to the European Union if the country withdrew from the single market.

BMW, according to the sheet, could put manufacturing of the electric Mini in its plants in Regensburg and Leipzig. Another option would be to produce it by contractual Dutch manufacturer NedCar.

BMW plans to introduce an electric version of the Mini on the market in 2019. The company did not comment on the report by Reuters.
